What is Vitiligo ?

The term ‘vitiligo’, means loss of colour on the skin, causing loss of pigment and melanin.It is classified as an autoimmune disease, a skin disorder distributed equally amongst the Indian diaspora, affecting adults of both sexes and children. However, more women and young females are prone to have this condition. Nearly 50 per cent of females develop it before 20 years of age. 70-80 per cent develop it during 30’s.”

In December 2022, an observation study conducted by the Indian Journal of Clinical and Experimental Dermatology found the Indian subcontinent has the highest prevalence of vitiligo in the world, at about 8.8 per cent.

According to Ayurveda the condition which has white colour patches on skin is known as ‘Shvitra’. In Ayurveda, Shvitra or Kilasa is the term employed to describe hypopigmentation disorders of the skin. Shvitra is a disease described under the heading of Kushtha (skin disorders) by most of the ancient scholars of Ayurveda

Cause of Vitiligo or Leucoderma

Shvitra is caused by various dietic and behavioral factors which imbalances the tridoshas in the one’s body  especially the Pitta & Kapha dosha vitiating the Meda dhatu. According to Ayurvedic principles, vitiligo is associated with the impairment of the skin's metabolic processes and the accumulation of toxins in the body. It is caused by consumption of protein and copper minerals by Indians. Other factors are severe patterns of stress, neurohumoral factors and autoimmune factors have been some contributing factors. Mostly patients get vitiligo through family history or drug usage.
